My 2022 in Review

I feel like this year has flown by, but after reminiscing, I’ve realised that I have done so much and have had many incredible experiences! So here is my 2022 in review! Enjoy! Trips Away I went to Caloundra and Mooloolaba earlier this year for trips away. I spent my days checking out beaches, relaxing, eating delicious food and watching sunsets with good company <3 Blue Hair I dyed my hair for the first time last New Year’s Eve! I’ve kept the tips of my hair blue all year round, just by refreshing the colour every couple of months. I’ve really loved having my hair blue! I think it represents me and my personality perfectly. Hikes and walks I’ve always loved nature and walks, and this year I have continued this passion by trying different trails! I’ve explored Karawatha Park Nature Reserve, Daisy Hill Conservation Park, and Enoggera Reserve, just to name a few! Days at Redcliffe Redcliffe has been such an amazing place to visit on days out! Walking along the pier, gettin...

The Importance of Advocacy

The word “advocacy” comes from the Latin ”advocare” and literally means “to call out for support”. Advocacy is acting, speaking, or writing to promote, protect and defend the human rights of individuals. In this blog I discuss advocacy for women with disabilities. This is something that is very close to me as I am one of these women. I also have placed a focus on self-advocacy. The base principle of self-advocacy is to be seen and heard as an individual, not as a disability, a number or a color . To be heard as a person who knows what is right for themselves. Self-advocacy is a process of taking power away from institutions and giving it back to the person to whom the power belongs. I think self-advocacy is definitely a way of life and a movement, and is possible when individuals are informed. Being informed means knowing your rights and the legislation that you are fighting against. It also means being able to see the bigger picture of what your actions will put into motion. You...

My Guide to Pets

Image
I think that one of the best parts of my life is my pet dog Zeus. My family got Zeus in March of 2018, we just recently celebrated his 2 nd birthday . Zeus enjoys playing with his toys, especially his toy bear.  He also enjoys eating paper, kicking everyone off my couch, and most importantly scaring off all the birds in the yard by barking and chasing them. But besides all that, he is a great source of comfort and provides lots of laughs to for everyone around him. Pets are incredible companions to have as they help us in a multitude of ways without even realising it. Having a pet can help alleviate anxiety as their interactions trigger the release of the happy hormones in the brain, such as serotonin and dopamine. I have personally found that Zeus is such a good stress reliever and can instantly calm me down.   Despite allergies and sensitivities to typical pets like cats and dogs, people can still have pets. Reptiles are great as they can live in a cage, you can even ho...

My Healthy Hair Care Routine

Image
There is a myth that natural products automatically cost a lot more. Over the upcoming months, I hope to break the stigma around natural products and affordability . This post will be addressing my natural hair care routine! Hair care that is healthy, as well as being cost effective, is important. I understand my followers can’t fork out money for expensive products that they don’t trust or know are effective. Some people believe that natural means more expensive, and this isn’t always true. I don’t spend a lot of money on my haircare products each month and I only need a small amount each time I wash my hair. My Current Hair Care Products: Nutriclean Original Lotion Concentrate (OLC) I use OLC in my daily life, and I use it as a substitute for shampoo. OLC is free from harmful chemicals, is biodegradable and made from Yucca Extracts & Botanical Surfacants. I like that Nutrimetics is confident enough in their product to tell their customers the exact ingredients. Knowing ...

Relaxing with Reiki

Image
Relaxing with Reiki Background info Reiki is a Japanese healing technique that transfers energy through the hands of a practitioner to provide healing. It uses energy exchange during the process and promotes stress reduction as it encourages relaxation. In reiki the person receiving the treatment lays on a bed and the healer places their hands on the receiver to their affected areas. Research suggests that reiki treatments are linked with improvements in depression and anxiety. Research has also shown that Reiki can be helpful for improving mood and relieving stress through lowering heart rate and blood pressure, and increasing immune strength. Reiki reduces stress by incorporating music, drums, breathing and training the mind to bring awareness to the body’s wellness. This shifts the body from a fight or flight (stress) response into a more relaxed state. Reiki involves the use of vibrations through the music and drums. Given there is scientific evidence behind the use ...

The Benefits of Music

Image
I believe that one of the best and easiest ways to reduce stress is through music. I love that music is so easily accessible and is available to people all over the world. It really is the global language that everyone can understand and love! For me, the best way to relax after a long day is to just chill on my couch and turn music on. I have also found that music gives me a source of calmness and peace that helps me to feel grounded in reality and helps ease my worries and pains. Recently I found an  article  that listed some of the health benefits of music. From this article I found that there is a difference between listening to fast and slow music. Where fast music can increase your heart rate and blood pressure, slow music can decrease your heart rate and blood pressure thus helping you to relax. I loved that the article also mentioned that the repetitive elements of rhythm and melody can help our brains to form patterns that increase our memory. Who would have thought...

The Power of Humour

Image
I believe that humour is a necessary part of my life that I use daily. I respond to humour with laughter, as many of us do. One of the reasons people enjoy humour so much is that it is a wonderful source of entertainment and brings happiness to your life. By using humour, I can be better prepared for when things go wrong. For example, if I am feeling down, I can laugh with my friends, I know that always cheers me up. I recently read an article titled “ Humour, laughter, learning and health! ”. For me, the most exciting part of the article was the interesting points made about trying out humour in the classroom. Research about the uses of humour: This research has led me to believe that humour can be used in many different ways. Without humour the world would be a sad place. One of the most powerful aspects of humour is the way in which it causes people to react. I think that the way we as humans respond to humour unites us. What I mean by this is that we all enjoy...
